What Normo is known for

Owner Jens Oris moved his coffeebar to Minderbroedersrui in Antwerp in 2011, succeeding his earlier Bar Choq, to focus on roasting his own beans in nearby Borgerhout; Normo now pours espresso, filter coffee and direct-trade tea.

Normo is run by Jens Oris, who moved his coffee business to its current spot on Minderbroedersrui in Antwerp in 2011 as the successor to Bar Choq, a coffeebar he'd previously run further down the same street. The relocation let him shift focus toward roasting his own beans, which now happens on-site in Borgerhout a few times a week — the smell of fresh roasting is part of the shop's identity, drifting out onto the street on roasting days.

The name is a play on wanting to raise the Belgian standard — the "norm" — for coffee, and the interior backs that up: much of the fit-out was built by Oris himself, centered on a prominent Probat roaster. The menu runs to lightly roasted, balanced espresso and a rotating filter coffee selection, alongside direct-trade tea curated by a Belgian tea sommelier and brewing accessories to take home. Normo also runs coffee subscriptions, delivering beans on a fortnightly or monthly schedule.

It's a small, owner-built operation rather than a chain outlet — the kind of Antwerp coffeebar where the person who roasted your beans that week is also likely the one pulling your espresso.
