Penti's roots go back to 1950, when brothers Mois and Yasef Kariyo ran two separate hosiery companies; the two merged in 1970 under the name Ogretmen Corap. The Penti brand name was registered in 1983, and the company opened its first dedicated Penti retail store in Istanbul in 1999. It expanded into lingerie and beachwear production after 2003 and launched online sales in 2007. Today Penti describes itself as Turkey's largest hosiery manufacturer, with a production capacity of about 68 million pairs annually at its Corlu facility. In 2012 the Carlyle Group acquired a significant minority stake in the company.
