Quoddy

Quoddy's roots lie in a handsewn moccasin-making tradition that developed among Native craftspeople in Maine and was later adapted for industrial shoemaking along the Androscoggin River in Auburn-Lewiston in the late nineteenth century. The Quoddy brand itself was started in 1947 by Jack and Anne Spiegel, and at its peak sold through more than 1,500 stores nationally. The original company ran into financial trouble in the 1980s and had shut down by 1995. It was revived roughly three years later, under new owners the Shoreys, as Quoddy Footwear LLC. Production now takes place in an 1876 textile mill on the Androscoggin River in Lewiston, where the company still handsews moccasins, boat shoes, boots, and slippers.
