Reid's Fine Foods

Reid's dates to 1928, when Arthur Reid opened the original store on Charlotte's Morehead Street, followed by a second, better-known Providence Road market in the early 1930s known for its butcher counter and bicycle grocery delivery. Chuck Richards, who started at Reid's as a teenage bagger and delivery driver in the 1960s, bought the business in 1984 and kept it running through the following decades. The current owners took over in 2010 and deliberately returned Reid's to its Charlotte roots, reopening in the Myers Park neighborhood on Selwyn Avenue, where they operated for five years before expanding to a second location at SouthPark. The company, now led by owner Tom Coker with his son and COO Thomas Coker, has since added a store roughly every two to three years and now operates five locations across Charlotte and Greenville. Today's Reid's pairs a specialty grocery floor — cheese, charcuterie, wine, prepared foods — with a market eatery and coffee counter, carrying forward the same combination of butcher-shop grocer and food destination that built the Providence Road store's reputation nearly a century ago.
