Sebago was founded in 1946 in Westbrook, Maine, by Daniel J. Wellehan Sr., William Beaudoin and Joseph Cordeau, taking its name from nearby Sebago Lake. The company's first product, a hand-sewn welted penny loafer drawing on Native American moccasin construction, sold well enough that Sebago reached its millionth pair by 1954. Sailors within the company's own ranks pushed development of a dedicated boat shoe in the late 1960s, and the resulting Dockside launched in 1970, becoming closely associated with Ivy League and preppy dress through the 1970s and '80s, including an appearance in 'The Official Preppy Handbook' (1980).
