What Shinya Kozuka is known for
Tokyo menswear — dramatic oversized silhouettes and hand-painted details from Central Saint Martins graduate.
Shinya Kozuka is the founder and designer of Shinyakozuka, a Tokyo-based menswear brand specializing in dramatic silhouettes and conceptual collections. Kozuka graduated from Central Saint Martins in Menswear in 2013, then returned to Japan where he started his eponymous brand in 2015. The brand won the Tokyo Fashion Award in 2023. Kozuka regards fashion as something more than clothing, believing that sound, scent, objects, scenery, and human presence must all coexist to produce fashion. Shinyakozuka is perhaps best known for its dramatic, oversized silhouettes, most notably the signature oversized baggy pants and boxy, structural workwear jackets, which often utilize heavy-duty 14oz denim or canvas. Many pieces are hand-painted or finished by the artist himself. Collections are organized by issue numbers and include recurring themes such as the Ordinary Life collection line, collaborations (notably with Dickies), and conceptual series exploring ideas through garment construction.
