What Tazza d'Oro is known for
Near the Pantheon — granita di caffè con panna (coffee granita with cream), the summer ritual, and the Rome caffè that invented the coffee slushie.
Tazza d'Oro's own site dates the business to 1944, when it opened as an artisanal coffee roastery in Rome, and the company describes itself as the only original-era artisanal coffee business still operating in the city's historic center. Four generations of the same family have run it since. The house's signature blend, La Regina dei Caffè ("the queen of coffees"), anchors a lineup that also includes an organic line and single-origin options, and the roastery bottles its own coffee liqueur, Aroma di Roma.
The café trades as "La Casa del Caffè al Pantheon," a name that points to its best-known address, steps from the Pantheon in Rome's centro storico, where the house specialty is granita di caffè con panna — coffee granita layered with cream, sold by the cupful through the Roman summer. It's less a single café than a small roasting company that happens to run a famous coffee bar: the family sells whole beans, capsules, and moka pots alongside the granita, and treats the organic and ecological side of its production, per its own site, as seriously as the historic blend that built the name. Eighty years and four generations in, it's still the same family pouring the same queen-named blend a few steps from the Pantheon.
