Tefal is a French cookware brand that pioneered the non-stick cookware category. The brand was founded by French engineer Marc Gregoire, who watched his wife struggling with food sticking in a traditional pan and had the revolutionary idea to bond PTFE (Teflon) to aluminum. In 1956, Gregoire set up the T-fal company in Sarcelles, France, producing his innovative non-stick frying pans. The success was immediate, with millions of French kitchens acquiring Tefal products. In 1961, Tefal began exporting to the United States and was eagerly adopted by Jackie Kennedy, then First Lady. The same year, Tefal created its production site in Rumilly, 20 kilometers west of Annecy, establishing the facility that remains central to the brand's manufacturing. The company has been owned by Groupe SEB (a global manufacturer of cookware) since 1968. Tefal is known for creating the non-stick cookware category and for offering frying equipment with minimal requirement of fat or oils. In the United States, Tefal is marketed as T-fal. The brand's Ingenio stacking system revolutionized cookware efficiency and modularity.
