Waldläufer was founded in 1960 as a family shoe factory in Schwanheim, Germany, established by Gunter Bauer under the company name Lugina. The brand name Waldläufer, German for 'wood walker' or 'forest runner,' reflects the founding family's own enthusiasm for hiking and the outdoors, and set the direction for a shoe built around walking comfort rather than fashion-led design. From the outset the company's stated aim was to combine hand-finishing techniques with the more consistent, repeatable results of modern manufacturing equipment, rather than choosing one approach over the other. The business has stayed in the same family for two generations and remains headquartered at the Lugina factory in the Palatinate Forest region of southwestern Germany. Production today is carried out across several European countries, including Hungary, using manufacturing processes the company describes as environmentally conscious, spread across smaller and mid-sized factories rather than large single-site plants.
