What Andrew Gn is known for

Singapore-born, Paris-perfected opulence — Andrew Gn embroiders occasion dressing the way jewelers set stones: densely, deliberately, to be kept.

Andrew Gn founded his Paris house in 1996, and it has spent nearly three decades perfecting one register: ornament without apology. Born in Singapore to a family of collectors, trained at Central Saint Martins in London and the Domus Academy in Milan, then seasoned as assistant to Emanuel Ungaro, Gn arrived in Paris carrying two continents of decorative memory — and put them both on the dress.

The signature is East-meets-West maximalism executed at couture standard: embroideries dense as lacquerwork, enameled buttons made like jewelry, brocades and prints that quote Ming porcelain and French decorative arts in the same breath. The clothes are manufactured mainly in France, and the finishing bears comparison with the haute couture ateliers even though the house shows ready-to-wear.

His clientele is the global occasion-dresser — royals, first ladies, red-carpet regulars — women who need a gown to survive a hundred photographs. In a Paris that spent decades worshipping minimalism, Gn kept the embellished tradition alive with such consistency that it circled back to looking radical.
