What Self Portrait is known for
London-founded label (Han Chong, 2013) known for guipure-lace occasionwear at accessible prices. The Paris area tag reflects its three Paris boutiques (Rue de Sevres, Bd Haussmann, Faubourg St-Honore), not the brand's origin.
Self-Portrait was founded in London in 2013 by Malaysian-born, Central Saint Martins-trained designer Han Chong, after he left the label Three Floor (which he co-founded in 2011) to pursue his own vision. The brand built its identity on occasion-ready pieces - guipure lace dresses, ruffled midi dresses, statement eveningwear - priced below traditional luxury markups. Selfridges became its first major stockist in 2014, followed quickly by Matchesfashion and Net-a-Porter; the label has since been worn by Beyonce, Kristen Stewart and Kerry Washington. Self-Portrait remains headquartered and designed in London, but it operates three boutiques in Paris - at Rue de Sevres, Boulevard Haussmann and Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore - plus placement in Le Bon Marche.
