Carolina Herrera was born Maria Carolina Josefina Pacanins y Nino in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1939, into a family with ties to the city's civic elite. After early work as a publicist for Emilio Pucci in Caracas and a period of social prominence in Venezuelan and later New York circles, she moved to New York in 1980 at age forty and, encouraged by Vogue's Diana Vreeland, launched her own collection in 1981, debuting at Manhattan's Metropolitan Club. A Park Avenue boutique, Martha's, put her clothes in its windows, and the house built its reputation on structured eveningwear and bridal design - Carolina Herrera personally designed Caroline Kennedy's 1986 wedding dress. The company later expanded into fragrance, most recognizably the Good Girl line, along with accessories and footwear. In 2011 the house was acquired by the Spanish beauty and fashion group Puig. The label remains headquartered in New York.
