What Tiffany & Co is known for
New York’s blue-box jeweler since 1837 — the Tiffany Setting, Elsa Peretti and Schlumberger under LVMH stewardship. The Fifth Avenue store, open on this corner since 1940, reopened in April 2023 as The Landmark after the LVMH-era renovation.
The blue box precedes the jewelry. Charles Lewis Tiffany opened his New York store in 1837 and spent the century turning American retail into theater: the first retail catalogue, the acquisition of the French Crown Jewels in 1887 that earned him the nickname "King of Diamonds," and the six-prong Tiffany Setting of 1886, which lifted the diamond off the band and became the default grammar of the engagement ring worldwide.
The house's design history is unusually deep for a jeweler its size — Jean Schlumberger's enameled fantasies (Jackie Kennedy's bracelets), Elsa Peretti's Bone cuff and Open Heart, Paloma Picasso's graffiti. Audrey Hepburn at the Fifth Avenue window in 1961 fixed the brand in cinema permanently.
Under LVMH since 2021, the maison has been polished hard — the Landmark flagship on Fifth Avenue rebuilt as a ten-floor museum of itself. The robin's-egg blue, trademarked as a color, remains the point: no other house is identified that completely by a shade.
