Cotelac was founded in 1993 on the shores of Lake Nantua by Raphaelle Cavalli, who trained in fine art in Lyon, and Pierre Pernod, who had previously created the label Tehen. The house is based in the Ain departement, not Paris, and its collections are still produced in its historic workshop in Amberieu-en-Bugey, where fabric is pleated by hand and by machine. The brand built its identity around in-house fabric treatment - dyeing, pleating and print development - applied to loose, artisan-feeling womenswear rather than fitted tailoring. In 2004 Cotelac launched a second, more casual line called acote and began expanding internationally, adding boutiques in France and abroad, with a Paris store among its several French locations.
