Diptyque

Boulevard Saint-Germain, Paris / Online

📍 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain (historic flagship), 75005 Paris

What Diptyque is known for

The Boulevard Saint-Germain oval — Baies, Feu de Bois and the literary candle trinity since 1961. Shop name taken from two equal street windows (boulevard Saint-Germain and rue de Pontoise) that read as an opened diptych.

Three friends — a painter, a set designer, and an interior designer — opened a bazaar of their own finds at 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain in 1961, selling printed fabrics and objects; the candles came in 1963 and the first eau de toilette in 1968. That artistic, amateur origin still defines Diptyque: the oval label with its dancing letters, the literary scent names, the refusal of celebrity perfumery. The candles — Baies, Figuier, Feu de Bois — became the reference luxury candle, the object by which the entire category is judged, while fragrances like Philosykos and L'Ombre dans l'Eau carry the same botanical intelligence. The house remains resolutely Parisian in sensibility, and 34 Saint-Germain is still its address of record. Baies is the canonical first candle; Philosykos, an entire fig tree in scent, the canonical first fragrance.

Burn the first candle a full two hours on first lighting so the wax pools edge to edge — the house's own advice, and the difference in scent throw is real.
