What Ensar Oud is known for
Founded in 2004 by Ensar Gül as Oriscent in New York, Ensar Oud sources wild agarwood directly from forests in Burma, Borneo, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia, distilling it into pure oud oils, attars and wearable perfumes.
Ensar Oud was founded in 2004 by Ensar Gül, who started the business in New York under the name Oriscent before building it into what's now widely regarded as one of the most exacting Western-run oud houses. Gül's approach was to go past the trading houses that supply most perfumers and follow agarwood into the forests themselves, working across Burma, Borneo, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia over two decades of fieldwork. That search has narrowed as wild oud has become harder to find — most of Indochina's old-growth agarwood has been harvested out — pushing sourcing toward the remaining wild stands in Assam, Borneo and Papua, where century-old trees still stand. The company distills and blends what it finds into pure oud oils, traditional attars, and a line of wearable perfumes (EO Perfumes), alongside oud wood and incense sold directly to customers who track distillation batches and origin much as whisky drinkers track cask numbers. The pitch is deliberately not about consistency — Ensar Oud says outright that what ends up in a given bottle won't be repeated — which runs against how most fragrance brands operate, but matches how genuinely wild, batch-variable agarwood behaves. It's a house built on a founder's personal fieldwork rather than a fixed formula, with oud oils, attars, and rare aged agarwood as its core business.
