Fernie Roasting Company

Fernie, BC

What Fernie Roasting Company is known for

Fernie Roasting Company grew from cast-iron pan roasting on a family deck in 2020 into an electric fluidized-bed roastery by 2025. Its core lineup includes Mt Fernie, Ghostrider and the dark-roast First Chair.

Fernie Roasting Company began in early 2020 as a hobby, with its founders experimenting with roasting on a cast-iron pan on the family deck; by late 2020, requests from friends and family for more coffee pushed the operation into larger-capacity equipment by early 2021. The company air-roasts using fluidized-bed roasters rather than the drum roasters most specialty roasters run - it operated two Sonofresco units before upgrading in 2025 to a larger electric fluidized-bed roaster built by Coffee Crafters, a move the company frames as an environmental one, cutting the hydrocarbon fuel the older roasters relied on. The core lineup runs four coffees at a flat $21.95: Mt Fernie and Ghostrider, both medium and medium-dark Colombian roasts, Yard Sale, a medium-dark blend, and First Chair, a dark Colombian roast. Green beans arrive in protective packaging from Fernie's British Columbia base, and the company also runs a mobile roasting setup out of a utility trailer for events away from the shop. Roasting byproducts - the chaff and husks that come off during roasting - are donated back to local growers as soil enrichment, closing part of the loop between the roastery and the farms it buys from.
