Grenada Co-operative Nutmeg Association

The Grenada Co-operative Nutmeg Association was founded on March 27, 1947, by farmers looking to develop and market the island's nutmeg industry together rather than individually, and it still operates as a genuine cooperative today, with an active membership of roughly 3,500 growers. Around 85 percent of Grenada's bulk nutmeg and mace moves through the association on its way to export markets across Europe, Asia, Canada, South America, India, Argentina and the Caribbean, processed and graded by size at three separate stations before shipment.

Alongside the bulk export trade, GCNA runs a smaller retail line built around the same crop: ground nutmeg, a dry meat rub blending nutmeg with cinnamon, ginger, allspice and clove, a nutmeg hot sauce made from the pods themselves, a nutmeg cooler drink, and pressed nutmeg and mace essential oils. Its Nutmeg Spice Tea folds nutmeg into a blend with cinnamon, ginger and turmeric, sold in several flavor variations. For a nearly 80-year-old grower cooperative, the range shows an organization still finding new ways to use the whole nutmeg fruit — not just the kernel sold in bulk, but the mace, the pod, and the essential oil — rather than resting on its role as a bulk exporter alone.
