Hartford was created by Yves Chareton in 1979, starting in New York City, where Chareton had just finished business studies. The idea for the brand came out of a nightclub conversation with an old friend about finding real vintage 1950s-style American shirts. A chance encounter with a New York fabric dealer who sold him old stock of Oxford and chambray cloth gave Chareton the raw material for the first Hartford shirts. The studio later relocated to Paris, where the brand took its current commercial shape. Hartford's identity blends laid-back West Coast American style with European tailoring sensibility, winning a cult following including musicians Bruce Springsteen and Eric Clapton as noted fans.
