Illums Bolighus

Amagertorv 10, Copenhagen / Online

📍 Amagertorv 10, 1160 København

What Illums Bolighus is known for

Four floors of Danish design orthodoxy since 1941 — the department store as national museum, everything purchasable. With artistic consultant Brita Drewsen, Dessau's BO presented fully arranged interiors rather than isolated stock — contemporary accounts describe the 1925–28 concept as previously unseen.

Illums Bolighus has traded on Amagertorv since 1941 as Copenhagen's — and by widespread consent Scandinavia's — definitive design department store: four floors given entirely to Nordic living, from furniture and lighting to ceramics, glass, textiles, and kitchenware. The store functions as a permanent survey of Danish modern and its heirs: Wegner and Jacobsen chairs, PH lamps, Kay Bojesen's teak monkey, Stelton and Georg Jensen steel, contemporary studio ceramics — the canon and its newest additions under one roof, staged with the store's celebrated Christmas displays as seasonal high point. For visitors it solves a real problem: Danish design is scattered across dozens of makers, and Illums assembles the whole argument in one building on Strøget. Buy the small classics — a Bojesen animal, a PH glass shade — as the portable essence of the Danish home.

Ship large purchases rather than carrying — the store handles export smoothly — and start at the top floor, working down as the rooms move from furniture to hand-luggage scale.
