Institut Esthederm was founded in 1978 by Jean-Noel Thorel, a French pharmacist with a background in cell biology who also founded the NAOS group and the Bioderma and Etat Pur brands. Thorel's approach centered on formulating skincare that interacts with the skin's own biological processes. Adaptasun, one of the brand's early and lasting product lines, was built around a patented approach to sun care that aims to help skin build a longer-lasting tan. Institut Esthederm has continued to focus its research on hydration, hyperpigmentation, and sun protection.
