What Kien Fatt Medical Store is known for

Family-run Chinese herbal apothecary and sinseh clinic at 59 Jalan Petaling, trading since 1942 and now the last traditional TCM pharmacy on Petaling Street, run by third-generation owner Ng Chee Yat.

Kien Fatt Medical Store has occupied its shopfront at 59 Jalan Petaling, in the heart of Kuala Lumpur's Petaling Street market, since 1942, making it one of the oldest continuously operating businesses in the district. The shop combines a Chinese herbal apothecary, a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) clinic staffed by sinseh (traditional physicians), and a pharmacy counter selling over-the-counter Western medicine under one roof. Wooden drawers along the walls hold dried herbs such as cordyceps, dang gui and ginseng, dispensed as personalised prescriptions after pulse diagnosis consultations conducted on the spot. The business was founded by the family of current manager Ng Chee Yat, who took over its operation in 2000 at age 43 after his father's death; his wife Janice Sam and daughter Vanessa now also work in the shop, making it a three-generation family operation. It is documented in Malaysian press as the last surviving traditional Chinese medicine shop of its kind still trading on Petaling Street, drawing both long-time multicultural local customers and tourists curious about an apothecary that has outlasted most of its neighbours through more than eight decades of continuous operation in the same market street.
