What La Fée Maraboutée is known for
French ready-to-wear label founded in January 1996 in Roanne by designer Jean-Pierre Braillard and Jean-Michel Calsat, built around wearable knitwear and dresses; now runs more than 115 boutiques across France and took on investment from Capza in 2022.
La Fée Maraboutée was founded in January 1996 by Jean-Michel Calsat and Jean-Pierre Braillard in Roanne, a town in the Loire department long associated with the French textile and knitwear industry. Braillard served as the label's designer, building a ready-to-wear collection around wearable basics — knitwear, dresses and layering pieces — aimed at everyday French women rather than runway fashion. The brand's name signaled a lighter, whimsical identity distinct from more austere French ready-to-wear houses of the period. Growth was steady rather than explosive: the label built its retail network store by store, eventually reaching more than 100 boutiques across France, including several in central Paris, and continued opening new locations into the mid-2020s — ten new stores in 2024 alone brought the total past 115. Production has stayed partly rooted in France through long-term relationships with domestic manufacturing partners, alongside a stated commitment to more eco-conscious materials in recent collections. In 2022, the investment fund Capza took a stake in the company to support its continued expansion, formalizing outside capital in a business that had grown organically from a single regional workshop into a national retail chain over more than two decades.
