La Sportiva began in 1928 in Ziano di Fiemme, a village in the Dolomites' Val di Fiemme, when Narciso Delladio started making customized leather boots and clogs for local lumberjacks and farmers. During the Second World War he built custom mountaineering boots for soldiers, and post-war demand grew enough that he hired staff and founded Calzoleria Sportiva. His son Francesco expanded the business through the 1950s, presenting the La Sportiva collection at the Milan Fair before it spread across Europe. The brand's defining commercial moment came in the 1980s with its purple-and-yellow climbing shoe. As demand kept outgrowing its facilities, the company moved into a new, modern factory in Ziano in 1996. La Sportiva remains 100% owned by the Delladio family and now distributes in more than 80 countries, having marked its 90th anniversary in 2018.
