Laboratoires de Biarritz was founded in 2011 by Muriel and Jean-Marc Dubois, a couple who moved to the Biarritz area out of a shared passion for surfing and the ocean. Frustrated that they couldn't find sunscreens that were simultaneously effective, well-tolerated and respectful of marine ecosystems, they set out to formulate one themselves. The result was Alga-Gorria, a patented complex derived from Gelidium sesquipedale, a red algae harvested along the coast between Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, combined with seawater and a fully mineral UV filter. The first product built on that complex, the Alga Maris sunscreen range, launched in 2012, followed by a Meteologic skincare range in 2013 and an organic monoi line in 2015.
