Les Eaux Primordiales was founded in 2015 by Arnaud Poulain, a self-taught perfumer born in Arras in 1986 into a family of artisans — his father a metalworker, his uncle a cabinetmaker, his grandparents farmers. He discovered perfumery at 21 and trained in Lens under Amélie Bourgeois, who remains his technical mentor. The house takes its name from Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, evoking the 'founding waters' from which life emerged, and Poulain has described composing each fragrance from visual memory — paintings, photographs and the emotions they carry — organized into collections such as Superclassique, Supercritique, Superfluide, Supermassive and Superose.
Production is based at Le Domaine Primordial, an 1820s château on a 14-hectare estate in Acq, Pas-de-Calais, acquired around 2021 and housing a 700-square-metre manufacture with three production lines. By 2021 the company reported roughly one million euros in revenue and 22 employees, with fragrances distributed in about 25 countries through retailers including Galeries Lafayette and Harrods rather than through a brand-owned boutique.
