What Maison Labiche is known for
Paris embroidery-and-basics label founded in 2011 by Marie Welté and Jenny Richard, joined as co-owner in 2012 by Jenny's brother Jean-Baptiste Richard; known for hand-embroidered mottos on T-shirts and other wardrobe staples, now sold in 400+ retail points worldwide.
Maison Labiche was founded in Paris in 2011 by Marie Welté and Jenny Richard, with Jenny's brother Jean-Baptiste Richard joining as co-owner the following year and later becoming the company's president. The founders' starting idea was to take a familiar, popular garment — the plain white T-shirt — and apply a couture-associated technique to it: embroidery. Welté has described being struck by shirts her father wore as part of his 1950s boarding-school uniform, each inscribed on the chest, which she found compelling enough to build a concept around; 'Labiche' comes from 'la biche' (French for 'doe'), her mother's pet name. The founders wanted embroidery placed 'on your heart' — mottos, phrases and small motifs stitched over the chest — turning a basic into something more personal. What began as a single T-shirt offering has grown into a full range of embroidered clothing for men, women and children, including sweatshirts, shirts and jackets. The label has built an international following, including celebrity customers, and by the early 2020s was sold through more than 400 retail points across six continents, including department stores such as Liberty London and Harrods.
