Maison Michel was founded in 1936 by Auguste Michel, who opened his millinery workshop at 65 rue Sainte-Anne in Paris. In the 1960s, Michel handed the house to Pierre and Claudine Debard, who ran it until 2002; under their stewardship, Maison Michel became a preferred hatter for Parisian haute couture houses through the 1970s. Its relationship with Chanel began with a first collaboration in 1983, and in 1997 Maison Michel formally joined Chanel's Metiers d'Art collective of specialist ateliers. Today its artisans still shape hat crowns and brims over some 3,000 historic lime-wood forms accumulated over the house's history.
