What Nina Ricci is known for

Paris couture house founded in 1932 by Turin-born designer Maria 'Nina' Ricci and her son Robert; perfumer Francis Fabron created L'Air du Temps for the house in 1948, the fragrance that built its reputation.

Nina Ricci was founded in Paris in 1932 by Maria 'Nina' Ricci, a Turin-born designer who had risen to premier stylist at a Paris couture salon, and her son Robert. Backed by her jeweler husband Louis, Nina took creative control of the new house while Robert ran its business side — an arrangement later described as one of the first mother-son partnerships in couture. The house built its early reputation on eveningwear and made-to-measure dressmaking through the 1930s and '40s. Its defining fragrance, L'Air du Temps, was created in 1948 by perfumer Francis Fabron working with Robert Ricci to expand the house into perfumery — a move that, alongside the couture line, became central to the Nina Ricci name for the rest of the twentieth century. The scent is still sold today as part of the label's fragrance range alongside newer releases.
