What Miranda Bennett Studio is known for
Founder Miranda Bennett, an Austin native who began designing in New York in 2006, opened her Austin studio and shop in November 2015. Garments are cut and dyed on-site with indigo, marigold and other plant pigments, supported by an organic marigold-growing initiative with a refugee agriculture program.
Miranda Bennett, a native Austinite, began her design career in New York, launching her first clothing line in 2006 as an extension of her senior fashion thesis. After more than a decade in the industry, she moved back to Austin in 2013, and opened her namesake studio and storefront there in November 2015.
The studio formulates and applies its own plant dyes on-site, using natural pigments — including indigo, marigold and mesquite — on silk and cotton, explicitly avoiding the synthetic dye chemicals that would otherwise enter local waterways. The brand has since developed an organic Mexican mint marigold-growing initiative through New Leaf, the agricultural arm of the Multicultural Refugee Coalition, working toward using its own harvested marigold as a dye at commercial scale.
Miranda Bennett Studio also pays fair wages across its supply chain and has a documented history of employing newly resettled refugees, tying its sustainability practice to labor practice within the same Austin operation.
