Music Millennium

Music Millennium opened on March 15, 1969, founded by Don and Laureen McLeod together with Dan and Patty Lissy on Portland's east side. The store grew alongside the city's independent music scene for decades; at its peak the McLeods also ran a second, northwest Portland location and a dedicated classical annex next door called Classical Millennium, which opened in 1977. Terry Currier joined as an employee and became the store's manager in 1984. When founder Don McLeod died in 1996, Currier bought the business from his estate, becoming owner. Currier is also credited with coining "Keep Portland Weird," a phrase that spread beyond the shop to become a civic rallying slogan for the city. Under his stewardship Music Millennium held on as other independent record stores across the country closed, building a reputation as the oldest continuously operating record store in the Pacific Northwest. It stocks new and used vinyl, CDs, and other physical formats, and has long hosted in-store performances by touring and local musicians. In February 2026, with Currier having recently turned 70, the store's ownership publicly began searching for a successor to take over the business rather than sell to developers, having turned down such offers repeatedly over the years. The store's east-side building remains its anchor location.
