Nowy Kleparz's market origins trace to around 1320, when a trading square formed along the road running north out of Krakow. The present square dates to the early 20th century, when city authorities relocated trade away from the older Stary Kleparz market. A 1993 modernization added covered commercial pavilions, benches and a resurfaced market floor. Today it trades chiefly in dairy, fruit and vegetables, flowers and seedlings, food products and wicker/basket goods, and doubles as a transit hub for city buses and trams. Administratively, Nowy Kleparz sits within Krakow's District I Stare Miasto (Old Town).
