Roger & Gallet was founded in 1862 in Paris by merchant Charles Armand Roger and banker Charles Martial Gallet, who that same year purchased the 'House of Jean Marie Farina.' That earlier business had been built by Jean Marie Farina from 1806 onward around a cologne formula descended from one created by his great-granduncle Johann Maria Farina in the early 1700s, and had counted Napoleon and other European royalty among its clientele. Roger and Gallet continued producing the fragrance under the name Jean Marie Farina Extra-Vieille, and expanded it into scented soaps and other toiletries alongside the eau de cologne itself. The house's flagship Paris boutique is located at 195 rue Saint-Honoré, facing the Church of Saint-Roch; its interior, designed by Bénédicte de Lescure, is built to evoke an old-fashioned pharmacy updated with contemporary detailing. Roger & Gallet's product range today centers on fragranced soaps, eau fraîches and body care built around its historic scent families, including the original Jean Marie Farina cologne, sold through its own boutiques, department stores and pharmacies internationally. The brand is part of the L'Oréal group's portfolio of heritage fragrance and personal-care houses.
