Royal Copenhagen Flagship

Three wavy blue lines, painted under the glaze of every piece: Denmark's three straits — Øresund, the Great Belt, the Little Belt — the waters that define the kingdom, adopted as a maker's mark in 1775. Royal Copenhagen's logo is older than most nations' constitutions, and it has meant the same thing without interruption: porcelain by royal decree, made to the crown's standard, from the manufactory the Danish court called into being.

Two patterns carry the house across its two and a half centuries. Blue Fluted, the fluted white porcelain traced in cobalt, still sets the northern table — the pattern so embedded in Danish life that it functions as national tableware, inherited, added to, and recognized at a glance. And Flora Danica, the botanical service originally intended as a gift for Catherine the Great: every piece hand-painted with a different Danish plant, stroke by stroke, exactly as in the eighteenth century — a botanical encyclopedia you can dine from, still produced, still painted by hand, still among the most extravagant tableware on earth.

The Amagertorv flagship holds the whole story two doors from Georg Jensen's silver — Copenhagen keeping its crown jewels retail, side by side on one square. Walk the shop and the centuries collapse: the straits still flow in blue under the glaze, the flora still blooms one brushstroke at a time, and the royal decree of 1775 is still, piece by piece, being carried out.
