What Semicouture is known for
Italian womenswear line launched in 2009 by designer Erika Cavallini, its name evoking unfinished haute couture. Pieces are made in Italy, mixing tailored cuts with a bohemian, unstructured silhouette and archive-inspired prints.
Semicouture was launched in 2009 as a project of Italian designer Erika Cavallini, who had already built a reputation under her own eponymous label. The name is a deliberate contradiction -- 'semi' plus 'couture' -- meant to evoke garments that read as not-quite-finished, carrying visible seams, raw edges or asymmetric hems as a design language rather than a flaw. Cavallini describes the brand as an attempt to keep the Italian tailoring and finishing traditions of small-scale couture production alive at a larger, more accessible scale, rather than diluting them. Collections draw on archival research and artisanal workmanship -- prints, embroidery and unstructured tailoring -- filtered through a casual, bohemian sensibility aimed at a younger customer than Cavallini's main line. Production is entirely Italian, from initial design through cutting and finishing of each garment. Semicouture is part of the Abraham Industries group, alongside Cavallini's own eponymous label and Liviana Conti; the group runs a factory outlet in Limidi, in the province of Modena, where past-season Semicouture and sister-label stock is sold. The brand has built a following particularly for its knitwear, outerwear, and denim pieces, sold through stockists and its own e-commerce site.
