What Stagecoach Coffee is known for
A family-run roastery and espresso bar just off Main Street on Pioneer Street, Stagecoach roasts Arabica beans into house blends and single origins from Central America, South America and Africa. The cafe also serves breakfast sandwiches, panini, soups and smoothies.
Stagecoach opened on October 1, 1993, on Cooperstown's Pioneer Street, founded by Rod and Robin Torrence in a building constructed in 1791 as the Blue Anchor Tavern — one of the town's oldest structures, sitting at the corner of Pioneer Street and Stagecoach Lane. The Torrences roast in small batches on a Diedrich 12K infrared roaster, using only top-quality Arabica beans, and have run the business as a family operation from the start. Two of their children, Christopher and Matthew Grady, joined in 2004 and 2005 respectively, adding a second generation's worth of culinary and coffee experience to the roastery's day-to-day work. That family continuity, more than any single technique, is what the shop points to as its distinguishing trait — "generations of culinary and coffee industry knowledge, passed down and accumulated," as they put it. Alongside the roasted beans and espresso bar, the cafe runs a full breakfast and lunch menu with gluten-free and vegan options, sourcing ingredients from local farms and artisan producers around Otsego County. More than three decades after opening, Stagecoach still operates from the same 1791 tavern building, giving Cooperstown a working roastery inside one of its oldest surviving commercial structures.
