What Venini is known for

Murano's modernist furnace since 1921 — Fazzoletto vases and glass signed by century-defining designers. Official site still sells the Fazzoletto as a house icon credited to Fulvio Bianconi and Paolo Venini; the Murano boutique is on the same fondamenta as the furnace.

Venini was founded on Murano in 1921 by Paolo Venini — a Milanese lawyer with impeccable taste and heretical instincts — and became the furnace where Murano stopped repeating itself and joined modernism. His method was the invitation: architects, designers and artists brought to the island to think in glass with the master glassblowers. Carlo Scarpa's years produced the battuto and sommerso techniques' masterpieces; Gio Ponti, Fulvio Bianconi — whose Fazzoletto handkerchief vase of 1948 remains the house's icon — and later Tapio Wirkkala, Ettore Sottsass and Gae Aulenti all signed the catalogue.

The techniques are the treasury: canne verticali stripes, murrine mosaics, incalmo joins of separate colored bubbles — executed at temperatures where only inherited skill survives, by maestri whose lineages the house names.

Venini glass sits in MoMA and the Triennale; the Fondazione Cini archives its paper trail. Still blowing on Murano a century on, Venini remains the island's modernist conscience — art glass with authorship, signed in fire.
