Grace Wales Bonner founded her label in 2014, fresh from Central Saint Martins, with a project fashion hadn't seen stated so clearly: Black Atlantic elegance as scholarship — European tailoring in conversation with African and Caribbean intellectual history, each collection footnoted like the thesis it partly is. James Baldwin, Ishmael Reed and Senegalese photography sit on her moodboards where other houses pin fabric.
The clothes carry the research lightly: crystal-embroidered track pants, crochet in national colors, cricket knits and Savile-Row-grade tailoring cut with diaspora memory. The adidas partnership became a phenomenon of its own — her Samba editions are among the most coveted sneakers of the decade, resold at multiples within minutes.
London-based and serially garlanded — the LVMH Prize, BFC/Vogue awards, a Dior guest couture invitation, MoMA exhibition credits — Wales Bonner was named Hermès menswear artistic director in 2025, succeeding Véronique Nichanian's 37-year tenure while keeping her own house. The scholarship continues, now with the industry's finest ateliers as her library.
