<p>Claudio Antonioli opened his first shop on Milan's Piazza Lima in 1987, selling international names Italy barely knew yet — and betting that the city's appetite for the avant-garde was larger than its retailers believed. In January 2003 the store moved into Via Paolo Paoli 1, a building that housed one of Milan's silent-film cinemas in the 1920s; Storage Associati handled the renovation, Vincenzo De Cotiis added an extension in 2009, and the result is retail as dark theatre — concrete, shadow, and rails of black.</p><p>The position never softened: directional and avant-garde labels over mainstream luxury, the Rick Owens-and-onward axis given its Milanese embassy. E-commerce arrived in June 2008, carrying the store's styling service online, and the Antonioli name became shorthand across Europe for a particular uncompromising taste.</p><p>The taste eventually bought a house outright: in 2020 Antonioli acquired Ann Demeulemeester — the Antwerp poet of this same window — turning a retailer's conviction into ownership. The cinema on Via Paolo Paoli remains the mothership: Milan's dark-luxury authority, projecting since 1987.</p>
