Borovo was founded on June 7, 1931, by Czech shoe magnate Tomas Bata on the outskirts of Vukovar, Croatia, as part of Bata's international footwear manufacturing empire. Rubber-goods production began in 1933; at its industrial peak the Borovo factory employed around 20,000 people. After World War II, in 1945, the factory was nationalized. Its most celebrated product, the Startas canvas sneaker, was introduced in 1976 and became a fixture of Yugoslav popular culture; a revived version has since drawn coverage from outlets including Vogue and The New York Times.
