What Cointreau is known for
Confectioner brothers Adolphe and Édouard-Jean Cointreau founded their Angers distillery in 1849, and it was Édouard-Jean's son Édouard who perfected the clear orange triple sec — square bottle and all — in 1875. The liqueur behind the margarita and the cosmopolitan is still distilled at the Carré Cointreau in Saint-Barthélemy-d'Anjou, greater Angers, its production home since 1972.
Best for — Orange triple sec for margaritas, cosmopolitans, and cocktail gifting
