Ganter

Ganter began in 1922 in Waldkirch, in Germany's Black Forest, when master shoemaker August Ganter partnered with a physician to design an anatomically shaped sandal meant to support natural foot movement rather than constrain it. That collaboration with doctors and orthopedists set the pattern for the company from the outset: shoes engineered around the foot's actual structure rather than fashion silhouettes alone. The breakthrough that took Ganter from a regional workshop to a recognized German comfort-shoe maker came in the early 1950s, when its removable cork footbed, hand-molded to cushion and adapt to the wearer's foot, reached the market and proved durable enough to become a signature feature still used today. In 1977 the company introduced Ganter Aktiv, a lighter-weight line built to reduce strain on the back and joints during walking, extending the orthopedic focus into more everyday footwear. Ganter shoes are built on a graduated width system, from narrow to extra-wide lasts, aimed at wearers with sensitive feet, including diabetics. In 2000 the Lorenz Shoe Group acquired Ganter, and the brand continues to operate as a distinct subsidiary rather than being folded into a generic house line. The current range spans Aktiv comfort-walking shoes, Sensitiv styles, and newer merino-wool sneakers for temperature regulation, all still built around the cork-footbed and wide-fit engineering that defined the company under August Ganter.
