What Ichendorf Milano is known for

Founded in the early 1900s as a glassworks in Quadrath-Ichendorf, Germany, near Cologne; the design house relocated its studio to Milan in 1990, where it produces hand-blown glass, crystal, and (since 2019) stoneware tableware with international designers.

Ichendorf's story begins not in Milan but in Quadrath-Ichendorf, a small town near Cologne, Germany, where master glaziers worked silica and other materials into ornamental glass objects from the early twentieth century. Through the 1950s the house's aesthetic shifted decisively, abandoning the decorative excess of its earlier decades for cleaner shapes and unadorned material honesty, a change that set the direction the brand still follows. In 1990 its design center moved to Milan, where it has since worked with international designers on tableware and home objects produced using hand-blown glass techniques alongside crystal and, since 2019, stoneware. The Milan studio functions as a research and design hub rather than a factory floor, coordinating production that continues to draw on glass-forming methods established generations earlier in Germany. The result is a catalogue built on the long transition from ornament to modern form: pared-back glassware, tableware, and decorative objects that carry forward technical know-how from a century-old glassmaking lineage while being designed and directed from Milan today.
