Kazaemon Chaho

Kagoshima

What Kazaemon Chaho is known for

Kazaemon Chaho is the retail arm of Kagoshima wholesaler Shinbara Seicha, named for founder Shinbara Kazaemon. It sells deep-steamed Chiran sencha, shallow-steamed Kirishima tea, gyokuro, and 100%-Kagoshima matcha, blended in-house.

Kazaemon Chaho is the direct-to-consumer storefront of Shinbara Seicha, a Kagoshima tea wholesaler whose name traces to its founder, Shinbara Kazaemon. Family accounts describe him ferrying fine tea harvested in Ei across the water to the Osumi Peninsula, driven by the simple aim of getting genuinely good tea into more people's cups - the same premise the shop still trades on generations later. The house range runs through Kagoshima's two best-known growing styles: deep-steamed Chiran sencha, prized for a rounder sweetness and grown in a district that has taken regional tea honors in five consecutive years, and shallow-steamed Kirishima sencha, brighter and lighter in the cup. Alongside these sit gyokuro and a matcha made entirely from Kagoshima-grown leaf, plus roasted teas for a more everyday cup. The signature blend, named Kasaemon after the founder himself, is built for a smooth, understated sweetness rather than the more aggressive umami some Chiran teas lean into. What sets the shop apart from a simple retail counter is the wholesale operation behind it: decades of blending experience feeding into every bag, not just individual leaf selection. Orders over 10,800 yen ship free, and the shop still takes phone orders on weekday mornings and afternoons - a small holdover from a business built on direct relationships rather than volume.
