What Marni is known for

Milan's intellectual colorist — Consuelo Castiglioni's legacy of off-kilter prints and Fussbett sandals.

Marni was founded in Milan in 1994 by Consuelo Castiglioni, a Swiss-Italian who began by rethinking her family's fur business and ended up inventing a sensibility: prints that argue with each other and win, colors a committee would veto, silhouettes cut generous when fashion said tight. "Art-teacher chic" became the shorthand — intellectual, off-kilter, collected by women who buy paintings.

The signatures compounded quietly: the Fussbett sandal that made ugly-comfortable a luxury category years early, chunky resin jewelry treated as seriously as gold, the Trunk bag's saddle geometry. Castiglioni stepped down in 2016; since 2016 Francesco Risso has pushed the house from eccentric to ecstatic — hand-painted runway sets, mohair in crayon colors, shows staged in New York lofts and Tokyo gyms with audiences seated inside the art.

Under OTB Group, Marni remains Milan's licensed eccentric: the house you wear when matching would be a failure of nerve.
