What NTUC FairPrice is known for
Singapore's largest supermarket chain, a co-operative under the National Trades Union Congress founded 1973 as NTUC Welcome; over 100 supermarkets and 570+ retail touchpoints island-wide, member-owned via share subscription.
NTUC FairPrice began on 22 July 1973 as NTUC Welcome Consumers' Co-operative, opening with a single store in Toa Payoh. In May 1983 NTUC Welcome merged with the Singapore Employees Co-operative to form NTUC FairPrice Co-Operative Limited. It has since grown into Singapore's largest retailer, serving more than half a million shoppers daily through over 100 supermarkets plus more than 160 Cheers convenience stores. As a co-operative, it is member-owned: eligible individuals buy a minimum of 20 shares at S$1 each plus a S$3 entrance fee, giving them dividends, rebates and voting rights.
