Samson was founded in 1999 when Sophie Samson, a stylist and pattern-maker, met Stéphan Ricard, then a sales representative for major Italian fabric houses in France. Together they opened their first boutique on rue de l'Arcade, near the Madeleine in Paris, with the explicit goal of making bespoke tailoring more accessible than the traditional Parisian tailoring houses. The venture succeeded quickly enough that a second boutique opened the following year on rue de Tournon, in the 6th arrondissement.
The house controls the process from pattern to finished garment in-house, and sources its cloth from established Italian mills such as Vitale Barberis Canonico and Angelico for wool suiting, while the actual sewing of suits and shirts has been carried out by workshops in Poland since the company's earliest years, a structure the founders describe as keeping construction quality high while holding down cost against traditional made-to-measure pricing.
Since 1999, Samson has expanded well beyond its two original Paris addresses, now operating in Bordeaux, Marseille, Lille, Lyon, Nantes, Nice and Strasbourg in addition to Paris, and describes itself as a leading French bespoke menswear tailor built on the accessible model Samson and Ricard set out to create.
