What Versace is known for

Milan luxury fashion house since 1978—Medusa-logo maximalism, baroque silk, chainmail, and European glamour across menswear, womenswear, and lifestyle.

Gianni Versace opened on Via della Spiga in 1978 and made Milan loud. Where Armani subtracted, Versace gilded: Barocco prints, Medusa hardware, chainmail Oroton draped like liquid metal, and a front row he essentially invented — the supermodel era crystallized when Linda, Naomi, Cindy and Christy walked his 1991 show mouthing "Freedom." The Greek-key border frames it all — Magna Graecia running beneath the Medusa.

The house is inseparable from its family drama: Gianni's murder in 1997 on the steps of Casa Casuarina, and his sister Donatella — his muse, then his successor — holding the atelier together for over 25 years, from the jungle-print dress that literally caused Google Images to be invented to the brand's 2018 sale to Capri Holdings (then Michael Kors Holdings) and onward to Prada Group's 2025 acquisition, with Dario Vitale succeeding her at the studio.

What never wavered is the register: unapologetic glamour as a worldview. Versace remains fashion's argument that more is more — gold on gold, print on print, confidence as the actual product.
