What Khaite is known for
Catherine Holstein founded Khaite in New York in 2016 and named it from the Greek for "long, flowing hair" — a hint that the minimalism would be sensual, not severe.
Catherine Holstein founded Khaite in New York in 2016 and named it from the Greek for "long, flowing hair" — a hint that the minimalism would be sensual, not severe. The breakthrough was a cashmere bra: Katie Holmes photographed on a SoHo curb in Khaite's bra-and-cardigan set in 2019 crashed the website and announced a new American proposition — quiet luxury with an undertow.
The house built out from that tension: sculptural denim with 1970s hips, leather trenches, the Danielle jean, and hardware-heavy bags — the Elena, the Olivia — that furnish the look without shouting. Holstein's references run to American photographers and 90s minimalists, cut with an appetite the originals rationed.
The CFDA named her American Womenswear Designer of the Year twice running (2022, 2023), and the Mercer Street flagship gave the brand a home as considered as the clothes — travertine, oak, gallery light. Khaite is New York's current answer to The Row's whisper: minimalism, but with blood in it.
