What Kopi Aroma is known for
Kopi Aroma has roasted coffee at its Jalan Banceuy store since founder Tan Houw Sian opened it in 1930. Beans age up to 8 years before roasting on a 90-year-old wood-fired German machine.
Kopi Aroma has operated from Jalan Banceuy No. 51 in Bandung since 1930, when founder Tan Houw Sian set up the business; his son, Widyapratama, took over roasting in the 1970s and still fires the roaster himself most mornings. The building itself was designated a cultural heritage site in 2018, an art deco structure that's stayed in continuous use for nearly a century. What sets Kopi Aroma apart is what happens before roasting: green beans are aged for years rather than sold fresh off the harvest — Arabica for eight years to soften acidity, Robusta for five to bring down caffeine — with the extended storage also said to deepen the aroma the shop is named for. Roasting itself runs on a 90-year-old German machine, wood-fuelled, taking around two hours per batch rather than the few minutes a modern commercial roaster would need. The result is two single-origin products: a Mokka Arabika with a soft, low-acid, low-caffeine profile, and a Robusta built around strong bitterness and higher caffeine. Both are sold only in small quarter- and half-kilo packages, and only at the physical Jalan Banceuy storefront — no wholesale, no online shop. Between the multi-year bean aging, the original wood-fired roaster and three generations under one family, Kopi Aroma is less a coffee brand than a working artifact of Bandung's coffee history.
